GREENWICH, Conn. — Authorities say a Waterbury woman was killed when a metal object crashed through the windshield of the vehicle in which she was a passenger.

Police have not identified the item that struck 40-year-old Sara Betancourt on Interstate 95 in Greenwich on Saturday afternoon. They also did not immediately say where they think the object originated.

Betancourt was a passenger in a southbound sport utility vehicle when the item struck the vehicle and broke through the windshield near Exit 4, not far from the New York border. She was pronounced dead at Stamford Hospital.

The vehicle’s 60-year-old driver was not injured, and the incident remained under investigation Sunday.
