Pedal-pushing yellow lights
An NYPD blitz against bicycle riders who blow red lights in Central Park prompted legislators yesterday to introduce a bill requiring the city to set the signals to flashing yellow during the hours that cars aren’t allowed.
“I believe giving all these tickets for more than $200 is just for revenue,” said Councilman Ydanis Rodriguez (D-Manhattan).
Flashing yellow lights would allow bikers to keep pedaling — with caution — instead of coming to a complete stop.
Paul Steely White of Transportation Alternatives accused the NYPD of harassment.
“The NYPD is writing tickets for laws that don’t exist,” he said, citing summonses given adults for not wearing a helmet, which he said is not required under city law.
