Penguin ado at the zoo
New Yorkers are flipping over our newest cool neighbors, Will, Robert, Lyle and Slappy.
The four male king penguins, who were born in Texas, have just relocated to the Wildlife Conservation Society’s Central Park Zoo.
“Besides being the second-largest penguin species [after the emperor], the kings are the most brightly colored penguin, with big patches of orange and yellow on their chest and head, and are one of the most recognizable,” said Central Park Zoo Director Jeff Sailer.
Slappy, the eldest at 2½ years old, weighs 36 pounds and is 30 inches tall. He’s the natural leader of the quartet.
“The others follow him everywhere,” said Sailer. “Whenever he’s walking around the exhibit, they all march behind him single file.”
