A highway crew discovered dozens of dead pets dumped along a highway in Westchester on Wednesday, according to Fox 5 News.

The 36 dead animals found along the Hutchinson River Parkway included dogs, cats, and even an 18-inch South American lizard.

Investigators and the SPCA believe the animals had been professionally euthanized — some of the tabbies had been shaved — and were not abused.

Detective David Whitney told Fox 5 News that it’s possible a veterinarian’s office or animal hospital may be involved.

It is unclear how long the animals had been lying on the side of the road, but some bags looked new while others appeared to have been dumped several months ago.
