The owner of a New Jersey petting zoo has been indicted on animal cruelty charges after dozens of pigs were found dead, while other animals had injuries and diseases, according to reports.

Dennis Sugar, 47, was indicted last month on charges of third-degree cruelty to animals resulting in serious bodily injury or death and fourth-degree cruelty to animals resulting in bodily injury, NJHerald.com reported.

Sugar was arrested last summer at Sugar Sweet Farms on Route 94 in Lafayette. After the lease was up, he moved the farm to Route 206 in Andover Township on Oct. 11, the news outlet reported.

He also faces two disorderly counts of animal cruelty that are not part of the indictment.

A hearing in front of Judge Louis Sceusi last week for an arraignment was adjourned after Sugar said he needed a new lawyer.

“I only found out last Monday (Feb. 3) that my attorney wasn’t going forward with my case so we decided it was in my best interests to get a new one,” Sugar told Sceusi, NJHerald.com reported.

Assistant prosecutor Donald Cox said he had no objection to the delay, which is planned for March.

Based on an animal-cruelty complaint, detectives responded to Sugar’s property on Aug. 12, discovering about 30 dead pigs and 14 live ones that were malnourished.

The animals had no food and only dirty water to drink, officials said.

Investigators and a veterinarian also found a dead goat in a hay pile and goats with fractured legs and parasites, according to the Sussex County Prosecutor’s Office.

Sugar has said he plans to plead not guilty, NJ.com reported. If convicted, he faces up to 13 years behind bars.

He declined to comment when reached by NJ Advance Media by phone Tuesday.
