‘Phony’ PA cop is fired
The politically connected Port Authority Police big shot who padded his résumé with shady college degrees and wore fake medals was fired yesterday, authorities say.
Jay Alpert, an ex-Bergen County sheriff and Hackensack sergeant, was appointed a senior manager for the PA’s Office of Emergency Management after a recommendation by the administration of NJ Gov. Chris Christie at a salary of $110,000.
The PA’s inspector general re-examined Alpert’s academic credentials and discovered his bachelor’s and master’s degrees came from LaSalle University, in Mandeville, La., a “diploma mill” affiliated with a church whose founder wound up in prison for fraud. Sam Davis, Alpert’s lawyer, said his client “acted in good faith.”
