A seaplane flipped over in the waters off Suffolk County this morning, according to officials.

The plane went down in Great South Bay in Bayport about 6:45 a.m. When responders arrived, the pilot was standing on one of the pontoons of the aircraft with a life vest on, cops said.

One witness told cops that the pontoon of the plane caught the water as the plane was taking off, bringing it down.

The pilot was rescued by the Suffolk County Marine Bureau and members of the Coast Guard. There were no other passengers aboard the plane and the pilot had no reported injuries, police said.

FAA tail-number identification records show the plane is a Kitfox II fixed-wing single-engine and is registered to Joseph E. Cannizzaro of Bayport. It was not immediately clear if Cannizzaro was the pilot of the plane.
