The New York City Council has approved a plan to redevelop a section of Brooklyn waterfront where the renowned Domino Sugar refinery once stood.

The plan at the 11-acre site in Brooklyn’s Williamsburg neighborhood will preserve the refinery building and the widely recognized 40-foot-high Domino sign.

The development will include 2,200 apartments, a public esplanade, retail shops, cultural space and office space. The plan calls for 660 of the apartments to be for lower-income New Yorkers.

Domino began operations at the site in 1856. The East River fixture closed in January 2004, and was later granted landmark status.
