All three people aboard a small plane were killed when their aircraft crashed on Long Island Tuesday afternoon, police said.
The single-engine Beech BE35 was destined for a small airport in central Connecticut when it went down about 3:40 p.m. over a residential area in Syosset, the FAA said.
Police said the plane “suffered an unknown problem” — but didn’t immediately disclose any further information about the victims.
The plane, which departed from Myrtle Beach, SC, sent out a mayday call – which was received by the Republic airport in Farmingdale – just before the fatal crash.
Debris from the downed aircraft was scattered across several blocks – with part of wreckage, including a wheel, landing on a driveway on Townsend Drive.
Authorities closed a portion of the street Tuesday evening as they investigated the expansive scene.
The FAA will investigate and the National Transportation Safety Board will determine the probable cause for the accident.
