A plane with four people aboard crashed into the Atlantic off the coast of Long Island Saturday, officials said.

The plane, a Piper PA-31 Navajo, went down about a mile off shore, near Indian Wells Beach, at around 2:50 p.m. the U.S. Coast Guard said.

Two bodies were recovered, and two were still missing by early evening, the Coast Guard said. One body was recovered from the wreckage of the plane, while the other was found nearby, according to ABC 7.

East Hampton Town Police Chief Michael Sarlo confirmed the aircraft had lost contact with East Hampton Airport.

The Coast Guard, Air National Guard and East Hampton Town Police were searching for survivors.

Also involved in the rescue efforts were crew members on two commercial vessels that were in the area. One person aboard the fishing boat said they were navigating through a debris field that appeared to be wreckage from a small plane.
