Beachgoers on Long Island trying to make the best of the summer heat got quite the surprise Saturday morning — when a plane made an emergency landing on Smith Point Park Beach.

The single-engine, two-seater Cessna touched down on the sand near the visitor center at about 10:30 a.m. after reporting an engine problem. The pilot, Herbert Rey, and his passenger were not injured in the landing.
