Pol ‘pedals’ elec-bike bill
An Upper East Side legislator, deluged by complaints about wayward delivery bikes, introduced a bill yesterday that would require the NYPD to specify when it gives out summonses to users of electric bicycles.
“They’re a relatively new creation and they’re proliferating, and it’s not clear yet if they’re issuing the right number of summonses, too many, too few,” said City Councilwoman Jessica Lappin (D-Manhattan).
A survey of 1,305 constituents conducted by Lappin in February found that 72 percent had been hit or almost hit by a delivery bike.
The Police Department currently releases statistics on bike violations, but doesn’t distinguish between those powered by pedaling and those that run on a battery-powered motor.
