The man who died after drunkenly stumbling into a Manhattan manhole has been identified, The Post has learned.
Cesar Gabriel Cortez, 41, was identified Wednesday as the person who dropped 20 feet down the exposed manhole at Columbus Circle around 2:30 a.m. on Sept. 30, police sources said.
The Georgia man’s body was found badly decomposed Tuesday and partially eaten by rats.
The state Public Service Commission is now investigating how Cortez wound up in the hole left open by Verizon utility workers. The employees placed the metal cover over the hole hours later — not realizing Cortez was inside.
His cause of death has not yet been determined. Police said he may have been homeless.
