BOHEMIA, N.Y. — Police say a man slain in his Long Island home was trying to stop intruders from robbing another resident.

Suffolk County Det. Lt. Jack Fitzpatrick said Tuesday that Steven Privitera “interceded and died for his efforts.”

Police said two masked gunmen went to the home in Bohemia early Monday intending to rob the other, unidentified resident.

They confronted that person outside, demanded money and then forced their target into the basement.

Police say Privitera responded to the commotion. There was a struggle and he was shot.
