Mitt Romney’s fiscally conservative pick for VP is getting mixed reviews — but could fire up the GOP base, two polls out yesterday show.

A Reuters/Ipsos survey of 508 registered voters conducted Saturday through yesterday found 51 percent said Romney’s selection of Rep. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin didn’t change their opinion of the former Massachusetts governor and Republican presidential nominee.

Another 26 percent said they now view President Obama’s challenger more favorably, while 23 percent now see Romney less favorably.

A Gallup poll of 1,006 adults taken Sunday found that Ryan got the lowest marks of a just-named VP candidate since Dan Quayle in 1988 — but that 36 percent of Republican voters are now likelier to vote for Romney with the 42-year-old austerity budget proponent on his ticket.

Ryan was unknown to many Reuters/Ipsos respondents.

They said by 44 to 29 percent that Vice President Joe Biden is more qualified to serve as president.
