WOODLAND PARK, N.J. — The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey has hired a firm founded by a former federal Homeland Security secretary to review security at the New York City area’s major tunnels, bridges and airports.

The Chertoff Group is headed by Michael Chertoff, who also served as the U.S. Attorney for New Jersey in the early 1990s.

Its $300,000 contract was a no-bid deal.

Port Authority officials told The Record that’s due to the sensitive nature of the contract, adding that several firms were considered for the work. The review is expected to take six months.
