The Port Authority has decided not to cancel overnight PATH service on weeknights after the idea was floated in December, officials said Wednesday.
Port Authority chairman John Degnan met with the New Jersey Senate president and Assembly speaker and said the service would stay, legislators said.
The idea to end overnight PATH trips, as well as to privatize the agency, was proposed in a report released in December on Port Authority reforms.
“This is a victory for the hundreds of thousands of New Jerseyans who ride on the PATH system, especially the low-wage workers and young people who rely on the line as their principal mode of transportation,” said Senate President Steve Sweeney in a statement.
PATH is one of only four mass transit systems in the country that is open 24 hours a day.
