Passengers at La Guardia Airport are suffering major delays tonight after a massive pothole opened up in one of the two runways.
The landing strip has been closed since 3:10 pm, when the crew of an arriving aircraft reported seeing a hole, said Port Authority spokesman Neil Buccino. It turned out to be eight feet long by two feet wide, sources said.
The airport crew shut down the runway and are working on emergency repairs.
“It’s like closing down the George Washington Bridge during rush hour,” said the source.
Sources say it will probably take more than just tonight to fix the hole because the runway material includes a variety of materials and layers.
It’s not clear what caused the hole.
