The principal of a Harlem school where a 12-year-old girl drowned on a field trip this summer has been removed for allegedly putting his nanny on the payroll and giving her a free place to stay, officials said today.

While a host of parents and teachers called for the removal of Columbia Secondary School principal Jose Maldonado-Rivera in the aftermath of the tragic, poorly-supervised trip, it’s the unusual financial relationship Maldonado had with a subordinate that could get him canned.
