The city Department of Correction honcho accused of directing staffers to listen in to investigators’ phone calls will no longer be involved in probes for the city jails system, officials said Monday.

DOC Deputy Commissioner Gregory Kuczinski, who oversaw internal probes at his agency, “has been relieved from his investigation and call-monitoring responsibilities,” Correction spokesman Peter Thorne said.

Thorne said Kuczinski has not been fired, despite the city Department of Investigation’s recommendation that he be dismissed for engaging in “unauthorized surveillance” of DOI probers into the DOC.

City Hall spokeswoman Natalie Grybauskas called the allegations against Kuczinski “serious and troubling.”

“We will work with the Department of Correction and the Department of Investigation to determine what happened and what changes must occur to ensure that it doesn’t happen again,” she said.
