A prisoner under arrest for petit larceny escaped from a Greenwich Village hospital Thursday afternoon and was being sought by police, sources said.

Police from Midtown South brought Daniel Ortiz, 31, to Lenox Health Greenwich Village, at 7th Avenue and W. 12th Street, sources said. He fled at about 3:30 p.m., while wearing a leg shackle.

He was last seen entering a train station at W. 14th St. Police were searching the subway.

Another prisoner attempted to escape the emergency room of Bellevue Hospital on First Avenue at about 5:30 p.m., punching a detective after his handcuffs were removed. However, detectives in this case never lost sight of the 32-year-old and quickly placed him back in custody.
