ALBANY — The state Department of Corrections promoted 10 supervisors last week — as rank-and-file prison workers were being forced to swallow pay freezes and sweat over possibly losing their jobs, The Post has learned.

The announcement enraged the Public Employees Federation, representing prison doctors, nurses and social workers, whose members approved an austerity contract to avoid 3,500 layoffs — 446 of them in the prison system.

“The kick in the teeth is this was happening while we were trying to ratify a contract to save jobs,” said PEF spokeswoman Darcy Wells.

The DOC said the promotions filled key vacancies.
