Snip, snip, hooray!
Brian Ramkissoon’s eyes sparkled as he raced along the bright red and green athletic track on his scooter, while his excited school pals checked out the climbing frame, slides and other cool features in the community playground they helped to design at PS 203.
The happy bunch shared the spotlight as they celebrated the playground’s May 1 grand opening at the Flatlands school on Avenue M, off East 51st Street, with a family-friendly ribbon-cutting, deejay music, arts and crafts, and food.
As budding mountaineer Rory Robinson, 9, honed her scaling skills on the faux rock-climbing wall, art-smart Amr Alomari, 5, and his four-year-old sister, Afnan, made their mom a card for Mother’s Day at the arts and crafts table set up by one of the sunlit-splashed seating areas.
“The kids were ecstatic because they helped design everything, including the color scheme,” said parent coordinator Julianna Primo, adding that since most of the students live in the neighborhood they will be playing in it after school, too.
The construction was part of Mayor Bloomberg’s Schoolyards to Playgrounds campaign to open more than 250 schoolyards in underserved communities by 2012, and to help ensure that all New Yorkers live within a 10-minute walk of a playground or park.
