ALBANY — Keep your hands off Fido — swiping him could become a felony.

The state Senate passed a bill yesterday that would make stealing a pet dog or cat grand larceny.

Sen. Carl Marcellino (R-LI) noted an increase in pet theft, often for dog-fighting or puppy mills, as prey for exotic animals — or even for fur.

He said he hopes his bill will lead police to take pet theft more seriously.
