Jury selection began Tuesday for the man accused of murdering Queens jogger Karina Vetrano — while a judge revealed the suspected killer had been shipped out to a jail in Long Island for constantly yakking on the phone at Rikers.
“You understand why you’re at Riverhead right now?” Judge Michael Aloise asked Chanel Lewis ahead of jury selection for his retrial in Queens Supreme Court. “You’ve been abusing your privileges, calling 311 multiples times a day.”
Aloise told the 22-year-old he’d bring him back to Rikers Island for the upcoming trial, if he promised to behave himself.
Lewis said he understood to the need to tone down his excessive phone use — which included calling The Post from Rikers Island, complaining that fellow inmates masturbated constantly.
In a series of calls with Post reporters, Lewis went so far as to claim other inmates’ semen was contaminating his food.
The Brownsville man is facing murder, sex abuse, and other charges for the alleged slaying of Vetrano, who was attacked as she jogged through a Howard Beach marsh in August 2016. He initially confessed to the killing, but later recanted.
Aloise controversially declared a mistrial last November during Lewis’ initial trial — without reading jurors an Allen charge — after the panel declared deadlock following just 13 hours of deliberation.
No jurors were selected Tuesday.
Opening statements are expected Monday. If convicted, Lewis faces up to life behind bars.
