A Queens man who intentionally killed his girlfriend’s dog was sentenced to six months in jail on Tuesday.

Brando Henriquez was handed the sentence following his guilty plea last week to charges of aggravated animal cruelty, according to the Queens District Attorney’s Office.

“The defendant in this case intentionally killed his girlfriend’s dog and then callously left the animal’s battered corpse in a nearby parking lot,” Acting Queens District Attorney John M. Ryan said.

“This little dog was part of a family and a resident of Queens County, where we will not stand for violence and cruelty against anyone, including our four-legged companions.”

Henriquez tried to claim that Lavonia, a black-and-white Shih Tzu mix, ran away in July. Sadly, the dog’s battered remains were discovered days later by the woman’s family.

Surveillance cameras captured Henriquez leaving his then-girlfriend’s Broad Channel apartment with with a plastic bag containing a lump the size and shape of the dog on July 15, 2018, prosecutors said.

Henriquez was then spotted on another surveillance camera running toward a parking lot a short distance from his girlfriend’s home and returning without the bag.

In addition to his sentence, he will be banned from owning animals for 10 years and is required to register with the New York City Department of Health as an animal abuser.
