An elderly man was killed when a fire ravaged his Queens home early Wednesday, according to authorities.
Paul Agopian, 77, was found unconscious and unresponsive in the home on 55th Avenue near 90th Street in Elmhurst, where the blaze broke out just after 5 a.m., cops said.
Agopian may have been smoking in bed when the blaze broke out, according to police sources.
He was pronounced dead on scene by EMS workers.
Two firefighters were taken to NewYork-Presbyterian medical center with minor injuries, and two other civilians refused medical attention on scene, according to the FDNY.
A total 60 units responded to the fire, which was under control by 6:30 a.m.
Philomene Exantus, who takes care of a 92-year-old woman living next door, said she was jolted awake when firefighters kicked her door in.
“He said, ‘Ma’am, we’re from the fire department and we need to evacuate,'” she said. “I said, ‘I can’t leave, I have my client here, she’s bed-bound.’ The firefighters carried her down the stairs in her wheelchair.”
Exantus said she did not know Agopian.
“Throughout them battling the fire, I don’t think they knew where he was,” Exantus said. “Three adults came out and told them there was a man [inside]. There were no children — just three adults and a cat. The firefighters were amazing — they even gave oxygen to a cat they took out.”
