Three quick-thinking Queens prosecutors saved a suicidal man who was attempting to hang himself outside of a Kew Gardens office building on Friday.
The unidentified man had one end of the rope around a tree and was tying the other end around his neck around 1 p.m. when he was spotted by Assistant District Attorney Andrea Mauro as she walked out of Queens Borough Hall.
As the man started choking, Mauro and prosecutors Jason Trager and Gabriella Mendoza rushed toward him.
Trager swiftly untied the rope from the tree, as Mendoza supported his body and untied the rope from his neck.
“The man collapsed on the ground crying, gasping for air,” Trager said. “We are relieved that we were able to get him down from the tree in time. It was very sad and shocking.”
It was not clear if the man — described only as being in his late 50s or early 60s — had decided to end his life after leaving a court proceeding nearby, or had chosen the location for other reasons.
The prosecutors were lauded by Queens District Attorney Richard Brown on Monday.
“The assistant district attorneys in this office do a tremendous job each day of seeking justice for victims of crimes, but these three prosecutors went above and beyond the call of duty by stepping in to save a man who was obviously distraught and in desperate need. I am extremely proud of their actions,” he said.
The saved man was taken to a local hospital for observation and treatment, a Queens DA spokeswoman said.
