The Queens Killers?
If things had gone a bit differently in 1920, the Bronx Bombers would have needed a new nickname to match a proposed ballpark under the 59th Street Bridge.
According to “The House That Ruth Built,” a new book by Robert Weintraub, New York Giants brass decided to expel the Yanks from the Polo Grounds, which they rented to the American Leaguers, after they outdrew the Giants in the 1920 season. Yankee owners Jacob Ruppert and Til “Cap” Huston considered a spot under the Queens side of the bridge.
But eventually, Weintraub writes, a large South Bronx lumber yard became available.
