City Council Speaker Christine Quinn is facing an attack on her leadership post from the left — the far left.

Councilman Charles Barron of Brooklyn, a former Black Panther who has blasted Quinn’s stewardship of the council, announced yesterday he is running for speaker.

“I’m proposing to liberate council members, to free council members,” Barron said, flanked by the Rev. Al Sharpton, Queens Councilman Tony Avella and about 200 supporters.

The vote on Quinn’s re-election is next month.
