HARTFORD, Conn. — Competitive cheerleading is not an official sport that schools can use to meet gender-equity requirements, a federal judge in Connecticut has ruled.
Judge Stefan Underhill’s ruling rejected claims from Quinnipiac University in Hamden, Conn., that it could replace women’s volleyball with a competitive cheer squad and still satisfy federal anti-discrimination rules.
