UNIONDALE, N.Y. — Seventeen beaches in Nassau County have been closed because of heavy rain.

The county health department said 13 of the county’s beaches on the North Shore of Long Island and four on the South Shore are closed Saturday as a precaution because of Friday’s rainfall.

Officials said storm water runoff can cause unhealthy bacteria levels.
