Winter is finally here — two months late.
New York and its suburbs awoke today to a rain/snow mix, the first significant winter storm we’ve seen since last October’s freak nor’easter.
Galoshes might be a good idea — the storm is bringing the kind of precipitation that can make a slushy mess.
Shore areas and Long Island are expected to get the worst of it. Inland — to the city’s north and west — little if any accumulation is expected.
Before daybreak this morning, city roads and sidewalks were covered in light rain, but no snow, with walkers using umbrellas to fend off a soft mist.
The rain and snowfall was due from a storm that’s been moving up the eastern seaboard the last few days.
The storm was forecast to stick mostly to coastal areas as it cut a swath along the New Jersey shore and then through Long Island toward southern New England, according to AccuWeather.com.
As a result of the storm, the National Weather Service issued a winter weather advisory, effective until 6 p.m. today.
