Several environmental and neighborhood groups have sued the Coast Guard and Port Authority in New York federal court to halt a project to raise the Bayonne Bridge.
The Coast Guard failed to comply with federal environmental laws before authorizing the Port Authority to raise the bridge, the suit, filed Wednesday by the Coalition for Healthy Ports, alleges.
The Coast Guard approved the $1.3 billion plan in May after completing its own environmental review, but the suit seeks a more detailed environmental-impact study.
The project would raise the 82-year-old bridge’s roadway by 64 feet in order to accommodate larger cargo ships anticipated to begin using the expanded Panama Canal by the end of 2015.
