Former Police Commissioner Ray Kelly on Friday responded to the recent disclosure that many of his e-mails were deleted from his desktop computer — despite a federal court order that they be preserved — by saying he’s never deleted or ordered his e-mails deleted.

“I had no role whatsoever in how any NYPD personnel handled my email, its retention or deletion, while I was in the department or subsequent to my departure,” said Kelly in a statement. “I can unequivocally state that I have never deleted nor ordered anyone to delete any emails relevant to this litigation.”

In Manhattan court papers filed on Dec. 30, city lawyers said most of Kelly’s e-mails were “inadvertently” deleted when he left office at the end of 2013.
