It’s Zipcar on two wheels.

The city’s wide-scale bicycle-sharing program — due to hit the road by spring 2012 — will look very similar to the wildly popular car-sharing operation.

Riders will use an electronic membership card to rent and return a bike, officials said yesterday.

The cards, which will be read from a solar-powered, Wi-Fi-enabled kiosk at a bike station, will transmit the time and place a user takes out a bike.

Once the bike is returned to another kiosk, the cyclist swipes the card again and the time of return is logged in. If someone goes over the planned 30 free minutes, they’ll be charged.
