Gary Ackerman said yesterday that he’s stepping down after 15 terms in the House of Representatives.

New York’s redistricting would have placed the home of the veteran Queens Democrat in the district of Rep. Steve Israel, who is the chairman of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee.

Ackerman, whose current congressional district also includes parts of Long Island, said he was leaving even though the court’s approval of new district lines would have been “extremely favorable” to him.
