A Brooklyn elevator repairman whose botched work crippled a woman was sentenced Wednesday to 3 months behind bars on felony assault conviction after the woman described the horrific ordeal and her ongoing pain in a letter to the judge.
“This incident with that elevator dragging me from the first floor to the eight floor without stopping, causing me rapid pains, cutting, ripping, crushing and breaking my legs and hand, was because of your negligence, lack of precaution, and you not caring about who got hurt,” Debra Jordan wrote in her letter of the 2010 Christmas Day accident at SUNY Downstate Medical Center.
“The defendant acted recklessly here. There were guidelines in the elevator safety handbook that govern how an elevator is to be jumped and the defendant failed to follow those guidelines,” said prosecutor Lawrence Oh.
Elevator repairman Jason Jordan, who was convicted of felony assault at a jury trial earlier this year, said, “I’m extremely remorseful,” before he was sentenced.
“This is the first criminal conviction of its kind in this type of case,” said Brooklyn DA Ken Thompson.
The victim also described in her letter to Brooklyn Supreme Court judge John Ingram how the accident has destroyed her life.
“From that day forth I have become dependent on others, stuck in a wheelchair,” she wrote.
“Every time Christmas season comes around, my daughters always remember the incident that happened, and a holiday that used to bring joy now makes my family and friends sad.”
