New Jersey Republicans are charging that the probe into the Bridgegate scandal that embarrassed Gov. Chris Christie was a political hit job orchestrated by state Democrats.

Republican lawmakers on the panel investigating the 2013 George Washington Bridge lane closures accused Democrats of leaking documents and wasting tax dollars on the investigation.

“Legislative Select Committee co-chairs John Wisniewski and Loretta Weinberg pushed . . . what can be characterized as the dream agenda of national Democrats: to tarnish a potential 2016 Republican presidential candidate,” according to a report released Monday by the four GOP lawmakers.

The panel voted Monday to release its interim report to the public.

Wisniewski said Republicans “came up with a distraction” because they were unhappy about the full panel’s report.

“They’re going to accuse just about everybody on the committee of having some taint or some disqualification to try to distract attention away from the facts,” Wisniewski said.
