ALBANY — Republicans in the state Senate backed embattled Majority Leader Dean Skelos, and did not ask him to relinquish his top post in the wake of corruption charges.
Skelos met with GOP lawmakers in the Capitol for 3¹/₂ hours Monday and afterward, Sen. Kenneth LaValle said their leader got a “strong consensus” of support.
“This conference strongly believes in [the presumption of innocence], and the leader has indicated that he would like to remain as leader,” LaValle, of Suffolk County, said.
Earlier, upstate Republican Sen. John Bonacic said Skelos should step down.
“When any leader gets indicted . . . they have to resign and step down immediately,” he said.
After the meeting, Bonacic declined to say if that was still his opinion.
