A “minor malfunction’’ resulted in higher than normal levels of flouride in an upstate reservoir yesterday, officials said.

But the problem was contained to that reservoir and “New York’s water supply is completely safe for consumption,” a Department of Environmental Protection spokesman said.

The FDNY was asked to open some fire hydrants to alleviate water-pressure issues while the problem was being resolved.
