Just in time for the Rosh Hashana holiday, two restored tablets of the Ten Commandments are returning to their rightful place at the landmark Eldridge Street Synagogue in New York City.

One of the tablets had been believed lost for decades. Amy Stein-Milford, deputy director of the temple’s museum, says it was discovered earlier this year – carefully wrapped in the building’s cellar.

Both artifacts were created for the synagogue, which opened in 1887 on Manhattan’s Lower East Side. Made of wood and hand-painted, the newly restored tablets were being installed Thursday above the ark that holds the sacred Torah scrolls.

The synagogue was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1996. It also houses a museum on the Jewish immigrant community.

The Jewish New Year begins Friday.
