The young mother who mowed down a retired nurse at an Upper West Side intersection last November has been indicted on manslaughter charges carrying up to 15 years prison.

Jessica Altruz, 24, of The Bronx, sobbed loudly as she pleaded not guilty to charges she recklessly caused the death of Margaret Fischer, 67, then callously drove away without slowing.

“She was hellbent on beating a traffic light,” assistant district attorney Jordan Arnold told Manhattan Supreme Court Justice Bonnie Wittner, in asking Altruz’s bail be hiked to $500,000.

Surveillance video and multiple eye witnesses indicate Altruz was accelerating through a yellow light when she struck Fisher with her Dodge Charger as Fisher walked across West 93rd St. at Columbus Avenue, the prosecutor said.

Altruz continued speeding clear to Amsterdam Avenue, stopping only because the car ahead of her had stopped at a red light, the prosecutor said.

Defense lawyer Rebecca Kavanagh said Altruz had continued driving a half-block at most, and was “incredibly distraught” over what amounts to a split-second, “tragic mistake.”

The lawyer asked for a reduction in bail, noting that Altruz is the mother of a four-year-old daughter and could get as little as one year on the manslaughter; the judge kept bail the same, $100,000, which Altruz has yet to post.

She’s back in court March 22.
