A federal class-action lawsuit filed Wednesday seeks public access to a small island off Manhattan where the remains of about 1 million people who were poor or unknown are buried.
The suit against the city was filed in Manhattan by the New York Civil Liberties Union on behalf of families of those buried on Hart Island.
The suit seeks an injunction forcing the city to give relatives reasonable visitation rights, said NYCLU lawyer Christopher Dunn.
The Correction Department, which runs the island, said it allows regular monthly visits.
