A Rikers Island jail guard could be facing decades behind bars himself for ambushing an inmate as he showered – allegedly cuffing and severely beating the naked man because he had been disrespectful.
In the exchange, caught entirely on security camera, Corrections Officer Rodiny Calypso repeatedly punched and elbowed the cuffed man in the Feb. 2014 incident, according to Acting Manhattan U.S. Attorney Joon Kim.
Calypso then allegedly filed bogus paperwork to cover up the assault, claiming the unnamed inmate had spit on him, instigating the beat-down, and also downplayed portions of the assault in his report.
The 38-year-old Springfield Gardens man was arrested Monday, and charged with deprivation of rights under color of law and filing false forms.
If convicted, Calypso could face up to 30 years behind bars.
