A Rikers Island inmate went berserk on a health aide at the notorious jail Tuesday afternoon and held him captive until hostage negotiators helped free the man, authorities and law enforcement sources said.

The inmate, who was not immediately identified, flew into a rage at about 3:30 p.m. and took the clinician captive in the mini-clinic at the George R. Vierno Center on Rikers Island, according to the Department of Corrections.

Emergency services officers and a hostage negotiator responded to the scene and coaxed the man into releasing the clinician after a short period of time, law enforcement sources said.

The health aide was not injured during the ordeal, DOC spokesperson Peter Thorne said in a statement.

“The detainee has been separated from the general population and we are pursuing re-arrest,” Thorne added in his statement.
