A Rikers Island correction officer was stabbed in the ear by an inmate with a pen Saturday afternoon.
The guard was attacked while working at the George R. Vierno Complex, sources said. Another officer eventually came to his aid.
The inmate was arrested, and both guards were hospitalized and released.
In a statement, the head of the Correction Department, Commissioner Joseph Ponte, condemned the attack.
“This assault on our officer was unacceptable. Such attacks against the hard-working men and women who serve in our department will not be tolerated,” Ponte said.
