A Rikers Island correction officer was arrested Wednesday on corruption charges for allegedly smuggling loose tobacco to inmates and accepting over $8,000 in bribes.

Jose Garcia, 51, is also charged with promoting prison contraband, conspiracy, fraud, and neglect of duty during the period of January 2014 to November 2014.

He’s also the first person to be hit with a corrupting the government charge, a statute that went into effect on April 30, 2014.

Officers received a tip that Garcia was trafficking the tobacco, and later discovered he solicited and accepted payment for it via inmates’ friends and relatives.

He allegedly collected 64 money transfers, totaling $8,600, officials said.

Garcia left his job at the prison last week, and was arrested in Ohio, where he was visiting family.

He faces up to 7 years in prison.
