ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. — Officials in one Long Island community say a weekend gun buyback initiative has yielded 173 illegal handguns.

District Attorney Kathleen Rice says the buyback in Rockville Centre on Saturday was the fifth such event in Nassau County since 2008. Officials have taken in 1,470 weapons so far.

Those surrendering weapons get $200 and are permitted to leave the guns anonymously.

Money for the program comes from cash seized from criminals.
