Hizzoner caused quite a stir at the bustling market, 1520 Avenue M, where he engaged staffers and shoppers with greetings for the Jewish New Year, sampled a homemade knish and bought some honey, star fruit and ground horseradish to replenish his own holiday pantry.

“He was excited to see the community, and it was a nice experience for people to see their mayor,” said store manager Gershon Menzer.

Literally translated as “head of the year,” Rosh Hashanah is commemorated on the seventh month of the Hebrew calendar and begins the Ten Days of Repentance, culminating with Yom Kippur, which this year begins on September 28 at sundown.
